Salt Lake is so not like Portland. Yes, it's a nice city. But people seem much more status-conscious. Very conservative, even though most residents are no longer LDS church members. Extremes in weather -- snowy winters and blazing hot summers.= Not Portland.

Another CA suggestion: Laguna Beach is a very hip little place to live. It is pricey, but people are very outgoing and there is plenty to do. There is a nice, compact little 'downtown' area with lots of art galleries, funky shops, and cafes. My best friend used to live there and I always enjoyed going to visit. When I lived in Irvine (about a 15 minute car-ride away about 12 years ago) I used to drive down frequently to just hang-out and window-shop. There are fabulous eateries, not a single one of which (that I can recall) is a chain, save maybe some fast-food options? Don't remember any in the main retail areas. The weather is gorgeous (and last winter's insane rain was quite an anomaly) although, being on the coast, there are plenty of foggy mornings and 'June Gloom'. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.

Look into Asheville, NC and Madison, WI. Madison is sunny, but COLD. Great lakeside setting. Asheville has mild temps year round and in a mountain setting and very funky, like Portland.

Agreed Salt Lake City is VERY conservative that = NOT Portland! Totally different mindset.

The OP should really specify what Portland qualities are most important to him. He didn't state he wants a liberal town.

If it's liberal + sun it could be Berkley. If it's outdoor recreation + sun then I stand behind SLC as a potential fit.

I moved to Portland from Salt Lake City 9 months ago after a 3 year stint there. There are more similarities between the two cities than you may think. Salt Lake City proper is actually a very liberal, diverse city. The downtown core is very lively with numerous condos, bars, and shopping complexes popping up with Trax light rail service within walking distance of most downtown attractions. I think Salt Lake gets a bad rap bc it's in the conservative, Mormon state of Utah. But it's not any different than how liberal Austin is in the conservative, right wing state of Texas. Although I'm very happy with my decision to move to Portland, I have nothing but good things to say about Salt Lake City (I want to emphasize that I'm talking about the city proper and not the homogenous mormon suburbs)
