As was mentioned in another thread most NW apartment buildings are small and owned by small investors. The cycle time for vacancies is short. One building that has had a great reputation for generations is the Vista St. Clair, but like many vintage buildings I doubt that they have in-unit laundry equipment.

The challange here is close in NW, SW; parking for 2 cars, in unit laundry - all for $1,500 or less.

OK, what property would you recommend?

OP, would you consider getting rid of one of your cars? We sold our second car before we moved to Portland and haven't missed it at all. It would certainly open up possibilities in your price range and what you sound like you want.

Thanks, Neil for reframing the question- we definitely would love tips on specific buildings. Re: cars, we had just assumed we'd bring both; we're so used to midwest living where they're a necessity! Since they're owned outright I think we'll keep them but here's another option: rent a cheaper space in an area with lesser demand and take public transportation to the second car when it's needed. Feasible?

It's feasible, but I think you'll quickly realize that you just aren't using it that much. You said your significant other was working downtown? And you're going to live downtown? Downtown is not that big. I think you may be underestimating how walkable, transportation-oriented Portland is.

But to each his own.

No, my fiance doesn't have a job yet- Match Day for residents was Mar 17, so he's just beginning to apply, and from what we hear he's more likely to have success once we have a Portland address anyways. I just said he might work downtown since he's in accounting and I know financial stuff happens in a greater density in city centers. But who knows, he may work in Tigard or Beaverton or Eugene, and then we'd need that second car.

Don't consider commuting to Eugene, it's just too far.
