They don't really get the most media attention around Portland, but the Winterhawks have won the first two rounds of the four-round playoffs of the Western Hockey League (WHL), and will now either play the Spokane Chiefs or the Tri-City Americans in the conference finals, starting on April 22nd at the Rose Garden, at 7pm.

WHL playoffs: Winterhawks advance to Western Conference finals with 4-2 win over Kelowna

Game attendance has been averaging around 8,000 per home game during the playoffs, which is pretty good by WHL league standards.

The finals begin Friday, May 6, at the Rose Garden. Games 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 will be broadcast on KUFO 970AM, while games 4 and 6 will be on KXTG 95.5FM. Both have internet streams.

I'm thinking about going to Game 1 or 2 at the Rose Garden... Winterhawks games are fun, they usually get a good crowd for hockey considering the lack of real media attention they get in Portland.

At least one Portland team can make it out of the first round of the playoffs...

This is some very good news about the Winterhawks!!

As you posted tablemtn, ice hockey don't get the media attention in Portland. For a city the size of Portland, 8,000 hockey fans in the stands would draw much more attention from the Oregonian.

Anyway, not to hijack this thread, but I have three times this year (2011) been downtown for a cultural event, and riding home late at night on the MAX, when either a Winterhawks' game, or a Timberline's game has let out. An experience in rush hour type mass transit crowding, but late at night. I am going to use a phrase, and I hope the phrase conveys the correct meaning, "Rowdy, but Polite" to describe the sport fans who boarded the MAX after a winning game each of the three games. Other cities I have lived, although I didn't ride mass transit home from games, it would have been more just "Rowdy and Boisterous."

I think this is a positive point for Portland.

Woah woah woah... Portland has a hockey team?!

Next you're going to tell me they have a soccer team!

All kidding aside, many congrats to the Winterhawks. And I agree with comments above - Winterhawks games are a lot of fun. Can't wait to go this weekend!
