I will be moving with my child to the Portland area within the next few months and I was wondering if anyone had any information on the school systems and what areas to look in.

Check out the PPS website where you can find info on demographics, test scores and maps of the district areas. You can input your address or potential address and find out what school that property feeds into. Good luck!

Depends on the age of you kids...and your income.

Some of the best schools are in the really good (expensive) neighborhoods- like Laurelhurst and Alameda.

Also, some of our schools have changed to K-8's, while a few have stayed with the Elementary and Middle School way.

Definitely check out www.pps.k12.or.us

Welcome to Portland.

Portland Public Schools have changed a lot (as in the schools themselves have changed demographics and K-5 became K-8 etc) in the past few years of so. In general, the best schools tend to be in the expensive areas. Elementary schools maybe are less economically defined, but by high school the distinctions are stark.

If you have young kids, note that some schools have language immersion programs which may or may not be of interest.

Again, as everyone has said, the website is pretty useful.

Default Thanks!

I Have definitely been perusing the website and checking things out. I guess really I just need to get out there as soon as possible to check out the areas personally. I'm originally from the PNW so it will be nice to be back there. Portland will definitely be a new experience though. Hopefully all will work itself out.

We are moving from Ohio and researching schools also. In the fall, we will have a first grader and a preschooler. We are a two mom family so I am looking closer in so my children will have a greater chance to attend a school with other children who also have gay parents. Probably west side Portland so my top picks are Chapman, Bridlemile, and Ainsworth elementary. We are also kicking around Llewellyn Elementary in Sellwood. Not really close-in enough for me but I am also considering Cedar Mill and West Tualatin View because the class sizes are small and they get great reviews. I am looking for a friendly neighborhood school where the kids (we) can make friends quickly. House/school/neighborhood hunting from another state is difficult but very exciting! I wish you luck in your search
