Well, it is true that we don't cover all the culinary skills of every part of the country. Frankly I think it is wonderful to visit cities that offer something different. I remember years ago taking my children to an Italian restaurant in NYC. They ordered pizza while I ordered a typically Italian meal. They looked at me when the plates were placed with a, "Why didn't you tell us?" expression on their faces. I love to eat Italian in NYC, dungeness(sp) crab in the pacific NW. There is heaven for the pallet in both places.

The Chicago kind that most people think of when they think of Chicago style is really Sicilian style. And not every pizza place in Chicago sells it. I don't think of it as a matter of "decent" put simply a different way of making it.

I understand that there is a vendor at the Farmers Market in the Park Blocks downtown that sells this type of Chicago style pizza. I haven't checked it out yet.

But I would encourage you to try different kinds of pizza that can be gotten here if you haven't already done so. There are many good pizza places in Portland.

The best pizza I've had in the Portland area was at Pasta Veloce in Tigard. I would order a pesto base with extra cheese, roast chicken and black olives. I know that's nothing like pizza in Chicago, but it really hit the spot.

Of course, they're no longer in business there. Story of my life.

BTW - also can't find an "authentic" reuben sandwich. All I find here is a corned beef with sauerkraut, swiss cheese and 1000 island dressing on light rye.

And a great place for that is the Goose Hollow Inn.

What exactly wasn't working for you, the data connection on your smartphone or something? I'm curious because we've relied heavily on Google Maps (we'd have been lost without it, literally) during the past several years of our exploratory visits to the Portland area and always found the coverage extremely accurate and helpful...in fact Portland has more useful placemarks already established than anywhere we've ever been. The amount of 3D models and photos on the Google Earth coverage of Portland is pretty impressive as well...you can go on a pretty effective virtual tour of much of the city.
