This is wonderful news. I hope we start to see many more stumptowns around the area as well as neighboring cities (or major cities such as Chicago). I hope they have some cute coffee places around town, this will be wonderful. Very happy to hear this news.

But as a chain, be prepared for the quality to decrease as they can no longer support high quality practices. IE, Starbucks.

Yeah, Starbucks was better before it became a giant.

Haha. Yes. But that's okay, it already wasn't the best Portland has to offer. But it is a little sad that everything Northwest-grown ends up selling out... What makes local things like Stumptown so awesome it that they're unique and only found in a certain place and feature local flavor and character. It makes things more interesting.

At least the owners got rich.
Why, those guys are sell-outs.
Once again real world capitalism knocks Portland spinning into left field.

Next up? Voodoo Donuts. I'm sure they could scoop up a lot of Krispy Kreme locations on the cheap.

(I have no knowledge of this, by the way, I just see how they leverage their bizarre brand to the hilt in the local and national media, and I wonder if they are going to do something with it...)

I guess we should be used to that by now. But I suppose human nature is such that people want to get as much as they can out of what they have. The interesting thing is that most of these places start out small, local and unique but eventually I guess the temptation to advance is just too much to refuse.

I'm all for the owners getting rich. They worked hard and got rewarded for it. I personally don't see it as selling out and envy them highly.

All it means is that the quality will suffer gradually until Stumptown will be another chain. In the meantime, everyone who really cares about good coffee will move to another local store. Everyone who just wants to get their daily injection of caffeine will continue going there.

Totally agree. This is how our world operates, we are all trying to make a lot of money.

People always whine about the coporate...Starbucks and Wholefoods. I love them both. And I love their product. I will actually start to go to stumptown when they are a chain!
