There's a pretty cool place called Jupiter Hotel (http://www.jupiterhotel.com/deals/index.cfm - broken link). They have some deals, tours, and a $59 "after midnight" deal. Another place that I found was called Mark Spencer. They have standard rooms starting around $99 and a "name your price" thing like Priceline.

My wife and I just visited Portland ourselves and are moving there at the end of the month. What we did is stay at the Red Lion on the Quay in Vancouver and took the Max into Portland. There is a path along the Columbia that you could go running on. The hotel offered free shuttle service to the Max station and a day pass, for the Max and busses, was only $4.75. We didn't miss out on anything and were able to check out all of the neighborhoods that we wanted and got an overall feel for each place we visited.

We had a great trip. Everyone we met was wonderful (someone even paid for our tickets on the Max the first day that we were there)! If you are into Farmer's Markets, be sure to check out the one at PSU on Saturday...go hungry.

after doing research on this hotel.. i wish i would have just tried to bid for a 3 star in beaverton or tigard.. turns out they only offer valet, which is 31 a day plus having the tip on top of that..

and they dont even offer free continental breakfast or free wifi in your room... dont they all offer this now a days?

for a 3.5star hotel im not impressed

Apparently, they don't "all offer this." In my experience, the nicer and more expensive the hotel, the fewer free services you'll find. Other places offer the free services to lure you in. Expensive hotels don't have the need to, and most of their clientele aren't on a budget.

And the answer to your complaint is ... Location, Location, Location. The Marriott is downtown. Of course parking is a premium. You have other options, than using the valet service. Park it yourself, and walk to it, rather than having it delivered to the door. That's why valet service costs so much. Where you should park it, probably would depend on how often you plan to use it. Another reason valet service is so expensive is, you usually have in and out privileges, meaning you could come and go all day.

Cheapest nearby parking is probably one of the SmartPark lots. But, if you're going to go in and out, it may not be so great an option. It's still not cheap for the weekdays, though. But cheaper than valet.

In certain areas you still have to pay until 10pm, but 7pm is usual.

Sundays are no longer totally free in all areas. Some areas are pay from 1pm to 7pm, some are still free all day.

Don't despair! The location of this hotel really is great. It's just a few blocks north of Pioneer Courthouse Square, where you can catch the red line and blue line MAX trains. The street car is just a few blocks west of the hotel and will take you to the Pearl District and Nob Hill. You can also easily walk to Powell's Books, Pioneer Square Mall, the Waterfront, the Saturday Market, Chinatown, etc., etc. There are also great places to eat nearby, including the large food cart pod on SW 9th and Alder, Kenny and Zuke's Deli, Portland City Grill (check out their happy hour and enjoy the view!), Mother's Bistro (great weekend brunch, but get there early), and Violetta (good burgers). If you're looking to splurge, I've been told that El Gaucho, which is just up the street at the Benson Hotel, is amazing. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

You are going to have an amazing time in Portland. It is a unique place. We've lived here for 12 years now and still haven't been to all the places we want to go. Really! There is something to be said about staying in the Pearl. If I was from out of town I would stay in the Pearl at the Inn at Northrop Station. It is a boutique hotel:Inn At Northrup Station Hotel We've stayed here and had several guest stay here for the reasonable price and exceptional location! Have fun in our big little city.
