my wife and I need help on a Portland neighborhood or nearby city 9we are open to both). We are moving from CA next August, so we have a little time to research this. My wife already has a job offer in Portland and I am seeking a new job in the Environmental field. We are looking to rent a new/newer 2 bed 2 bath house for under $1200/month with a yard and garage in a nice, safe neighborhood AWAY from the traffic and hustle and bustle but close enough (20 miles) for us to work in Portland. Looking for an area with shops, resteraunts, shopping, etc. I'm an avid fisherman so anywhere where the river is nearby would be a plus. We have no kids and are not going to have any soon. Anywhere in portland or a surrounding city come to mind?

Where is your wife's job?

Pretty much anywhere in Portland would be good with your broad requirements.

You'll need to travel to go fishing anyways, but if you're in PDX you'll be central to all the streams on the coast, and everything coming off of Mt. Hood. If you've got a boat, you can fish in the Willamette.

The real question there, is what do you want to fish for? Deep Sea? Trout and Bass? Sturgeon and Salmon?

With that budget, you could get a nice house pretty much anywhere besides Downtown Portland.

If you like more outdoorsy stuff such as fishing but still in a neighborhood that has good neighborhood amenities, I would look around Milwaukie/Oregon City/Clackamas (town center). Clackamas, in particular, is right on the MAX line so you can take that right into downtown, however there is also bus lines that go to the MAX from Milwaukie that's really close. The commute would be about 15 minutes (not on a freeway, straight up McLoughlin St). You'll also get more bang for your buck rent wise down there.

You can fish for salmon in the Willamette if you have a boat... south of Portland, in West Linn/Oregon City.
