I have recently accepted a job just South of Scappoose. I have been to the Portland area, but, I am not sure which outlying are to relocate to. My wife and 3 year old son enjoy the outdoors (camping, fishing, hiking, biking, off-roading, etc.) and would like to live in an area that affords us the ability to do some of these things from our doorstep. I have been looking at Gresham, Beaverton, Aloha, Scappoose, and other areas as well. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We love Bend and the feel that it has, it would be nice to find this somewhere close to Portland.

If you like the outdoors life, I'd go west of Scappoose. Housing will be much cheaper, nature much closer, and the commute to work not so long. Having to commute through Portland will make it a long one.

If you're working in Scappoose, live in Scappoose or St. Helens.

The commute from Portland, or worse, over Cornelius Pass from Hillsboro/Beaverton is pretty bad.

The only downside is that both towns are small town blue collar. There are drug problems among the teenagers, and little for children in general to to.

Another option would be to look on Sauvie Island.
