It's finally happening! I'm headed to Portland in two to four weeks.

Suggestions for finding an apartment from Texas? We have apartment locators here; does such a thing exist in Portland? I've googled but haven't found much information.

I know a lot of the housing is privately owned so I'm looking for any suggestions you guys have.

Thanks in advance.

In this town you are your own apartment locator with help from the likes of Craigslist & padmaper. Plan on staying a week or two in a hostel or extended stay establishment while you and the landlord look each other over. Be sure to bring along the name & phone number of your former landlord for reference purposes.

If you would give us the general area where you will be working and your need some of us will give you a hand about where to look.

Let's see - where I'm working isn't 100% quite yet but it's looking like it'll be near the east side (9728 SE WASHINGTON ST).

You won't find apartment locators but you can GOOGLE management companies and inquire as to whether or not they have openings.

There are also large apartment buildings that often have vacancies. Again, GOOGLing can help you locate these. There are also past threads mentioning these places on CD.

Apartments are at a premium and the best are gotten through word of mouth or "For Rent" signs put on the lawns. The best way is to scour the neighborhoods if you can come before you move.

Right. I've googled and googled.
The issue is that I won't be able to come out before I move. I'll have a day or two to find a place once I get there - however, I need an address for the moving companies and stuff. :\

The first link is for condos to BUY, not rent. The only condo development I know of that has a lot of rentals are in the buildings in a series with president names in downtown SW, but to my knowledge there is no property management company that handles rentals in those buildings (individual landlords).

There are large apartment buildings in the south waterfront neighborhood. If you are going to rent sight unseen I think that would be your best bet. Shoot for a unit with an east exposure because I-5 is to the west. They aren't the cheapest by any means but they should handle a transferee well and should be able to handle paperwork from out of town. On Craigslist search for 'south waterfront'.

This firm specializes in vintage properties, they own them: KBC Management manages unique rental properties in Portland Oregon Few of their units stay vacant long.

These folks manage mostly suburban buildings. I notice that they have something in NW. That development was rental, then condo, and now appears to be going back to rental. For Rent | Bluestone and Hockley Real Estate Services

BTW, do not rent in the building directly east from the train station unless you absolutely LOVE trains.

The Portland Towers or the Vista St. Claire are possibilities, again not cheap.

Basically large multi-family buildings are located in the suburbs or in the core area. Generally speaking rents decrease as you go out from the city center (except around large employers such as Intel or NIKE). The smaller buildings are owned/managed by individuals who don't trust anyone who would lease sight unseen.

Sorry about that. I was mistaken. I was thinking of the Vista St Clair. Thanks Nell.

Here's one I rented from for ahwile in my SE neighborhood.

They aren't cheap but they do the job. They have several properties in the Buckman area around Hawthorne Blvd that are very nice. There is one right next door to me and another across the street.

Another option could be temporary housing. Like The Residence Inn at the Lloyd Center or River Front to move to and stay until you can find place on your own. Probably also not cheap though.

Frankly I like the Vista St. Claire for new additions to our community who want something close to the action but genteel accomodations. Not everyone's cup of tea but if you get a good reference from them as a tenant you are good as gold.
