Speaking of cars; are there laws that require special tires in the winter ? I seem to have read that somewhere.
Years ago in NY, (and I am not sure why ) , we needed chains on our tires for the snow, but that can't be the case for Portland, can it?

Not that I'm aware of...I do see signs when I've driven up to the mountainous areas about wearing chains but in the city I don't see any at all. From what I've heard the city doesn't get much snow, if any, and isn't prepared for big winter storms so I can't imagine you'd have to have special tires.
Anyone else know any differently??

mt. hood area requires traction device when it snows.
In the city, I think they sometime require traction device on Burnside going up West hill if there are snow on the road. not 100% sure about this.

about winter attires, people wear all kind of clothings it's no big deal, just wear whatever makes you comfortable.

Thanks, JoJo!
I couldn't stand driving in the winter conditions of the Midwest so needless to say I don't think I'll even be driving Burnside if the weather isn't well over 32 degrees!! Don't even want to risk it....
Thanks, again!

People who live up in the hills tend to put studded tires on their car for winter. I can recall only one time since I moved here that chains were required IN the city and that was from a freak storm.

Ah, well since I'm not near the hills I should be fine with my typical tires...I hope so, anyway!! If there's any question, I'm staying home!!

That's the thing--99% of the time the conditions here are fine for driving and if they're not, stay home! But any time we get a snow or ice storm every idiot in the county goes out and tries to drive somewhere and then gets stranded on the freeway or featured in something like the famous video of Portland where you see cars sliding down the hills! People here do NOT know how to drive in snow or ice but they always try to.

Yes, even I (a non-youtube viewer) have seen that particular video. Scary. But, I do believe that it is inexperience in driving on ice that is partially at fault.

The West Hills in Portland have been designated as "urban snow zones," meaning that traction devices are required in those areas when there's accumulating snow or ice on the roads. I haven't seen the signs in the lower-lying areas.
