I got my first speeding ticket (photo enforced) in Portland and am so mad about it. I know it's my fault but the fine is huge and I just recently moved/started a new job, so it's a stressful time.

Any tips or information on how to proceed? If I went to court would it automatically get reduced??

I haven't had to deal with the photo tickets but I would go to court and let them know that you are new to the area, were driving on unfamiliar streets, that it is not your pattern to drive above the speed limit, and if you were exceeding the speed limit you were unaware and are really really sorry. If your driving record is clean the Judge often will have mercy ... at least that is how it used to be.

Unlike CA (where my daughter lives) speed limits are just that, limits. Usually you can fudge it for 5 MPH but not more.

Also note there are now some speed limit signs that say "Strictly Enforced". These usually are on collector streets that pass through residential neighborhoods. This usually means you will get a ticket for going even five miles over the posted limit.

I have unfortunate news for you... you got your ticket too late. Usually going to court results in a good discount. However, the last legislative session passed a law removing judges' discretion - so I believe you will have to pay full freight. Do some research, though - this law may not go into effect until January 1.

I am in the process of paying a speeding ticket by photo radar, for going 12mph over speed limit. My only complaint is that the fine is 190.00. Now to me, that is the true definition of "Highway Robbery".
