I know it's a little late this year, but it's never too early to look ahead to next summer. That said - what are some good swimming holes? My criteria for "good":

* Must be outdoors, but not utterly frigid.

* Something that is beyond the ordinary concrete pool. For instance Sellwood Pool would be out, but Kah-Nee-Tah would work, given it's hot springs fed and has slides. Anything naturally occuring - lakes (even if dammed), rivers, or springs - would definitely be an option.

* Family friendly/no nudity. I know that knocks out most hot springs, but are there ones that don't have nudity?

* Within about a two hour drive of SE Portland (think a circle w/extremities being Astoria, Chehalis, The Dalles, Madras, Santiam Pass, Corvallis, and Newport).

* Has a reasonable area for kids that aren't strong swimmers.

Friends/co-workers suggested Timothy Lake, the Washougal River, and Lake Merwin, so we're aware of those. We did try out Silverton Reservoir, but the water was way too deep for the kids to truly enjoy.

Benson Lake up the Columbia River near Multnomah Falls.

The Columbia River - beaches just off I-5 in Vancouver, and near the Airport on the Oregon side.

Sandy River in Troutdale.

All of these were VERY busy today, but enjoy them while you can because in about a month they're going to be too cold to use.

hamelr is right with the rec of Benson Lake. If you're trying to escape a brutally hot summer day, I'd also recommend a hike up Oneonta Gorge just beyond Multnomah Falls. You are wading in the creek most of the way in to the falls and it's cold! Not swimming (unless you brave the deep pool below the falls), but always fun just the same!
