My wife and I moved from Portland to Phoenix about ten years ago and are now thinking of moving back. We were looking at apartments and cannot believe how expensive they are. Here in Phoenix I can find a a 1 bedroom with free cable, free wi fi, free utilities, and possibly a month or two free rent on a year lease, and they will be pet friendly. All for about $400 - $500 a month. Does Portland have any affordable housing?

Not all of that for $400-$500 a month. Maybe in the burbs for a couple $100 more but probably not with all those amenities.

And if you do find some place in that price range, I'd be checking it over really carefully.

In phx they wouldnt be that great either. In tucson you could get an apartment for 500 ish however most were blacklisted by the military. If the military black listed someplace its because of incidents drugs shootings etc. Even in tucson you would pay 700 for what is described in a nice area. I too am in a similar situation i was in the af for 11 years and now im back home in pdx. The prices have gotten out of control. Expect 7-900 minimum for a nice place. I found a home for 1200. If i were you id look in vancouver.

I'm guessing the situation will improve, though... a lot of investors are buying houses out of foreclosure, fixing them, and renting them, and they will need cash flow soon.
