Why do you want to move to Portland? Like a top 10 reasons list?

What possible difference could that make or how does it have anything to do with answering the OP's question?

The OP asked: "can you guys tell me a little about the portland area".

Well, if I knew what was drawing the OP to Portland, then I would have a better idea of the types of things the OP may be interested in hearing about.

Or alternatively, you could write 100 pages on this thread and cover everything about Portland, much of which the OP may have no interest in.

Which approach is more efficient?

You don't live here, why are you even asking that?

I second the Hawthorne Hostel recommendation, there is also a very nice hostel downtown

Why is someone who lives in NY interested in whether he moves here or not?

It really depends upon how much money you want to spend, whether you want a family oriented neighborhood, and how close-in to the center of the city you want to be.

Unlike many cities, Portland does not have a true ghetto area. In other words, if you use common sense precautions, you are not going to find areas of Portland where you will risk your life just by being there like you might in certain areas of Detroit, MI or Camden, NJ.

It varies depending upon square footage, number of bedrooms, size of lot, neighborhood, schools, etc. If you have between $300k and $400k to spend on a home, you will be able to find a decent modest-sized single family home in a decent Portland neighborhood. The $200ks are more difficult, but still doable if you are not as fussy and don't mind doing a bit of driving.

From November through April it is overcast, drizzly, misty, coolish, and feels kind of dark with lots of days in the 40's. From May through October, it is quite nice, with it being fairly dry and sunny pretty much all summer with lots of days in the 70's, and a few in the 80's. If you acclimate yourself to the rain in the 5 to 6 month rainy season by not letting a bit of water spoil your fun or getting out and enjoying nature, you will be fine. "Gloomy" is a state of mind more than anything else.

Portland has a very good music, brew pub, theater, and dance scene, especially for a city its size. In other words, there are too many choices to list, but you won't be disappointed unless you are looking for a stay-up-all-night atmosphere like you would find in Manhattan.

FWIW, the more the forum members know what you are specifically looking for, and what kinds of things appeal to you, the more detailed their answers can be.

Who said anything about being personally interested in whether or not the OP moves to Portland?

When you find out, please let me know.
