Last week I took my wife and kid to the Portland area for a visit. It was our first time to the area.

Have to say I'm really impressed by the city and surrounding area. We got to see the typical stuff, like Pittock, Japanese Garden, Washington Park, Powell City of Books, Saturday Market and Hoyt Arboretum, but also wandered around the city quite a bit and the Columbia River Gorge too.

Anyhow, you have a real hidden gem there. We had a great time there, and found the locals to be very friendly and helpful. Can't recommend it enough to anyone who wants to take a look at the place.

And Voodoo...wow!

I'm not sure how much of a hidden gem Portland really is.

Portland is a gem in many respects but certainly not hidden. It is very well advertised especially because we need all the tourism dollars we can get. Glad you liked it here.

It was hidden from me; I didn't know anything about it except for one episode of Portlandia until around three weeks ago, when we moved here. So far, couldn't be happier. The Pacific Northwest rocks.

Oh my. That was taking a risk. But I am so glad it is working out for you. You have lots of great things yet to discover. And the perfect weather for it too.

It may be well publicized around the local area, but doesn't have a significant national profile.

A great place though, very interesting location to explore.

My wife was a bit skeptical when I told her we should give it a visit, but left a big fan. She could have spent a half day in Powell City of Books.

I agree, on a national level Oregon isn't really thought of as a tourist destination. Of course it has an abundance of natural treasures, but it's not like Disneyland or the Statue of Liberty, or even the Space Needle is here. There are lots of states like that. Lots of lovely and interesting things to see, but if you told someone you were going there on vacation, people's first reaction would probably be ... "why??????"

I think people do have the "Pacific Northwest" on their radar. But I think they are usually really thinking of Napa Valley, etc.
