Hate to break it to you OP, but being a younger single guy in Portland, who is at all picky about women (ie; no fatties, no mommies, no weird hippie chix on vegan diets or hopeless headcases) is pretty much the crap sandwich of the decade being served to you on a plate. You'll find yourself screwing around with women you'd honestly never even bother with in AZ, simply because it's a supply and demand thing...you take what you can and what the market allows (same thing). The dating horrors I've witnessed here for guys (both myself and others) are absolutely epic. In the 10+ years I lived there, there was precisely one girl I met in class at PSU when I was 23 who I was really "wow" about and wouldn't mind running into someday to see where life took her, but I digress.

My advice for a practical guy? Either call your old girlfriend and beg to be taken back, or move. Enjoy Portland for what it is and don't waste too much of your time lamenting what it isn't. Be as friendly and charming as you can without being weird or pushy and see what brushes up against you. That's all you can do. I've personally concluded that online dating is a waste of time for me regardless of where I live. I cant tell if I'm genuinely attracted to somebody unless they're standing in front of me and I'm interacting with them, but with women it's different. They're browsing for stats, facts and figures, which is much easier to quickly list and scrutinize on paper than things like physical chemistry and personality compatibility. If you're a 6'4" fireman with a kickass townhouse in the city and the rugged good looks of a Gucci underwear model, sure, you'll get some action on Match.com. If you're anything besides? Good luck. That's my 2 cents re: internet dating. It heavily favors women and puts you in a position to waste a lot of your time which could have been more wisely spent elsewhere.

Gotta love the know-it-alls who've never actually gone out there and tried to do it. It reminds me of those dispatchers who've never been behind the wheel trying to tell me how to drive the truck.

Well, I've just come to the conclusion that this town is utterly hopeless. I've never had so much difficulty in my life than in this ****hole. Between the vacuum of a job market, and the festering boil of a dating scene, I positively can't wait to get out of here. I'm looking for work back in Phoenix as well as Denver where my brother is at.

Well, of course! You live in Vancouver. Move over to this side of the river and experience paradise!
