I'm American, with a Belgian wife, and I want to move back to the States. Should I hang out here in Antwerp until the economy improves. Also, what is the reutation of local (Portland) universities and the elementary school system (we have a 5 yr old).

The U.S. economy in general nor the Portland economy in particular are improving anytime soon. What is your disenchantment with Belgium? How does your wife feel about relocating to America? Does your kid get a vote? My advice: make the most of your EU citizenship. European debt crisis notwithstanding, the average European is doing much better than the average American.

Also note that the suburbs, for the most part, have their own school systems which are not a part of the Portland Public School system. Some of the suburban school districts are rated really high while some others not so high.
