You might want to join this guy - he seems to have it all worked out.

I achieve some of what the OP seems to want by living in a wooded area a few miles from the "typical" suburban and urban developed zone of a major West Coast conurbation (in this case SF etc). It's a suburban - rural existence. I currently still commute down the hill for work. That said, if I were not in that type of work situation I'd be more of the typical "mountain man" / backwoods type. That's what's great about the Western US, you really can live in two worlds. Of course when I get old I'll probably move to a more urban setting.

It worked out less than perfectly for this guy Into the Wild (2007) - IMDb

(not a bad film though, as usual, the book was better)

When I was young, and my father took me along to places near Death Valley as he did historical research, we ran into people who lived high up desert canyons, just scraping by, not seeing people-- and not wanting to. There are also groups of people (not just communes like from the 60s) of people who want to avoid a lot of material things and want to increase the degree to which they live a sustainable lifestyle (of course, some are truly serious and work to be knowledgeable on what to do; others are just kidding themselves).

I had a friend who used to live here:

Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage | Building Sustainable Community

This is a truly worthwhile lifestyle, but it is not a nomadic one.
