i belong to one here in phoenix and it's really helpful to see each other's pictures, trade things and get questions answered.

consequently, I only know how to garden in the desert, and am anticipating lots of gardening questions in the near future. I want to be ready when planting season comes so if you have any local website/forum recs I'd love them. I did find a nice planting calendar on Oregon Tilth's site.

I will miss munching on my garden fresh tomatoes in december

I just checked the Terms of Service for this forum and since there seems to be no prohibition against linking to other forums I will give you a link to a gardening subforum at one of my other favorite Internet forums: Gardening, Plants, and Agriculture.

Reddit also has a Permaculture subforum if you're interested.

I'm not sure what type of gardening you plan to do, but there is also a subforum on Hydroponic Gardening you might be interested in.

I like Northwestern Gardening Forum - GardenWeb It's northwest focused. Although it's a little slow at times, most people are pretty ready to give some help. There's also some threads already there about people new to the area and growing help.

Tomatoes are tough to grow here. Not enough summer heat.

But every year my neighbors grow tomatoes in our community garden and they grow like weeds. All different kinds too. I always get the overflow.

are community gardens common? I'd like to live in an apartment/condo community where they have those. I lived on a boat in Norther CA once and we had one. Everyone pitched in and when we needed basil for the pasta sauce or the strawberries for the cereal, for example, it was a luxury to be able to go to the organic garden which we trusted and loved working in as time permitted. Ours was an labour of love as for all the other residents. Any suggestions?

My apartment complex has one of the few remaining spaces for gardening for the tenants in my neighborhood. The other open spaces that used to be used for this purpose or just for some nice back or side yards have been taken over by builders with small apartment complexes and duplexs being squeezed in between already existing structures.

That may be one reason why the public gardens have such long wait lists.
