My family and I are trying to decide whether to visit Portland or Seattle this summer. Can anyone give me advice on which would be best for a family with two daughters? I have looked at beautiful pics and videos of both and they seem somewhat similar, but then again I am very green and know little about either place.

I think you need to give us more to work with than that you are a family with two daughters. FWIW, however, as far as which city to visit, Seattle would be my personal choice but you will notice if you look, that I do not live there.

Both cities have their pluses and minuses. What are you looking to find? Best for what?

How long of a visit do you have? It'd be possible to visit both cities and hit the major attractions in both.

Our daughters are 20 and 16, respectively. We like museums, the arts, movies, culture, hiking, biking and anything you can do outdoors. We will have a rental car, but would also appreciate being able to walk around. Our vacation will be between five to seven days in mid July.

Then you should seriously look into visiting both cities.

In Portland you'd want to visit Multnomah Falls for sure, maybe the Zoo, History Museum, the Art Museum, enjoy some food cars, hike through Forest Park.

In Seattle I'd suggest walking along the waterfront, go to the top of the Space Needle, visit that Zoo (I like Zoos!) maybe take a harbor cruise.

Plan on four hours to drive between each city. Or you can take the Amtrak.

Personally, I'd pick Portland. But then, I'm biased. I only know Seattle as a tourist, and it's a nice city, but I sure don't get a feeling that I'm near the outdoors at all. I guess heading across the sound to the Olympic Peninsula would be the best direction to head.

With Portland, if you have a week's worth of time ... it's so much easier to get out into nature much more quickly. Day (or overnight) trips to the coast, and to the mountains are both must-dos. Take two loop trips:

1. Up the Columbia River Gorge to Hood River, then back up over Mount Hood.
2. Down to river to Astoria, then down along the coast to (say) Tillamook, and back in to Portland.

The TravelOregon website has great descriptions of trips out of Portland.
