I am moving to Tigard in about 2 months. I came up to visit for a week and love it. Here's my problem, I have a 6 year old son with High Functioning Autism and he is mainstreamed with a wonderful aid in Los Angeles. I have spoken to the Special Education department for the Tualatin/Wilsonville school district and they say they don't believe in aids. What should I do? I'm freaking out because he's able to function in a typical classroom, but he gets sidetracked at times and needs re-directing. How is he supposed to get that re-direction w/out an aid? Should I bus him to another school? What are my options?

Here's what I put in the other thread:

Are you buying a home in Tualatin for sure or? There are two groups you might want to look into joining for more specific Autism info about schools in Oregon:

Portland Aspergers Network, Portland, Oregon, Resources for Families, Children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), a form of high-functioning autism (HFA)
and n group that has a lot of members in the Portland area that's a yahoo group (I don't have a link--just do a search in yahoo groups). AutismrecoveryOR.

Just because they claim they won't do something doesn't mean you can't fight for it in your IEP!

Hello! I am moving to Tualatin for sure. We are moving in November, my husband's company transferred him. We both love Oregon compared to Caleifornia because there is no smog, friendly people and there is not a big
rat race. We found a nice house in Tualatin, the only thing is the school. I read your posting about how they need to follow the IEP, but they made it sound like there are no aids at all in their district. If we put up a stink and say we want there to be an aid, do they need to abide by his current California IEP?

I don't know, but if you join those groups you'll be in contact with a lot of experienced parents. Each district is different.

Hi, I'm a new member with nearly the same situation as yours. My 7 year old has HFA and is doing very well in a public school in DC with an aide. The Portland Asperger's Network (PAN) has lots of great information on its website and Yahoo group. There's a link from the website. Also, ORPTI has been highly recommended (website is ORPTI.com). It stands for Oregon Parent Training Insitute (I think) and they provide invaluable help to parents in preparing for IEP meetings, even providing advocates to go with you. I'm not sure who you spoke to (and its either Tigard/Tualatin or West Linn/Wilsonville) but if your son needs an aide then they have to provide one, regardless of their "beliefs" on aides. If it helps, all my research has been that both T/TSD and WL/WSD have great reputations for special ed. Good luck.

Jessgo - How has the school year gone for you? Do you mind sharing which Tualatin elementary school your son attends? We are starting the process for our 5-year old and any information that you could share would be wonderful!

Jessgo hasn't posted anything to City-Data.com for more than 8 months. There is a good chance she won't see your question.
