My family and I are planning to move to Portland next year. Would it be possible for us to find a 3-4 bedroom living space within public transit areas for around $1200/mo? I saw some nice ads on Craigslist but want sure if those were accessible for public transit.

Well, I cannot imagine a three or four bedroom house or apartment for around $1200 a month in Portland. But it is pretty difficult to tell you whether or not the areas you found on Craig's List were accessible to public transportation without knowing where they were.

The suburbs maybe?

Yeah, a lot were in Beaverton.

It is possible in Beaverton which is a suburb right outside Portland. What you need to do is look up the Tri Met trip advisor and enter the address of the place you are looking at and then the place you will need to go. It will tell you the nearest bus or light rail to you.

Some parts of Beaverton are near light rail transportation or a bus line but some are not.

Thank you. I still can't figure out why there is so much flak for Beaverton. It sounds lovely to me.

I think it is a nice suburb. It has really grown during the past years but so has every area around Portland and that includes Portland. I haven't been there in a long time but I understand it has parks and lots of shopping and restaurants.

Since it's right on the border of Portland it's not that long a drive to downtown if you want to do something there.

I don't think there's much flak over Beaverton. It's nice as characterless suburbs (which are most of them, IMO) go.

If you're looking at public transport, simply look up the specific address on tri-met's website. That'll tell you if it's served by the buses/trains/streetcars or not.

Beaverton is fairly well-set for public transportation. The main east-west Max rail line plows right through the town. The Tri-met planner link up there will also have maps in it that should give you a good idea of where and what.

Getting to PDX from Beaverton will involve one of two routes: Hwy 26, or the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway (In B'town it's called Farmington Rd, it turns into something else towards PDX).

Up until this weekend I lived in Hillsboro (a bit further west).

If you get that vibe, it could be that Portland is kind of an anti-suburb city. Many here like the fact that the city is condensed and not sprawled out as much as most major US cities.
