My wife and I like to laugh when we see someone in 1890s gear. (It's actually pretty common, bowler hats, waxed stashes, and thin suspenders).
I have to give props for shooting part of it in Olympic Provisions (which is a great place by the way!)

(and I actually have mutton chops and a mustache right now )

LOL! These people remind me of steampunk characters.

I wonder how many people have moved to Portland--or thought about moving here--since that show kicked off.

I'm a newish transplant myself. My family and I moved here a little over 2 years ago.

In my defense, though, I would say that my sister-in-law and her husband moved here in 1996 and we started coming out for visits back then. We knew then that we wanted to live in this area, but my school and jobs kept taking us to different places. We finally made it here.

And it is true about some of the hip eateries around. This is not just a Portland phenomenon of course, but for instance we keep wanting to try Pine State Biscuits but the crowds and lines keep us back.

I've been in Oregon for 5 years, and only recently moved out of PDX metro.

When the show came out, I didn't even know it existed until 3/4 through the first season (obviously I don't do much TV these days), but loved just how closely the skits actually well, fit.

The show has plenty of material from urban kitsch around the country. From the current issue of Time Magazine:

"Grant Achatz -- perhaps America's most brilliant chef -- last year opened two cocktail lounges in Chicago; the menu at one of them included 18 kinds of ice. (Smoked varieties led to a Portlandia recipe featuring "smoked ice.")

That is so funny. Now I wish someone would explain to me the purpose of all those different colored salts the stores are selling. I first saw them at Zupan's now Fred's has them.

I cracked up at "smoked ice"! I use smoked salt on some things and it tastes amazing! I figured they were making fun of ME

So does the color determines the taste? I am going to have to try that. But I think I draw the line at smoked ice.

The smoked salt I actually understand. The smoke itself imparts a flavor onto the salt that when mixed together creates a whole different flavor than each component alone.

Smoked ice? Umm, no thanks.

I thought smoked ice was a hilarious made up thing. Had no idea it was an actual thing!

I'm not sure how the color gets into the salt. I got my smoked salt because an employee opened it up and let me smell it...yum! Like a wood fireplace. If I tried any of the others I would open them and smell them or ask.

Each salt has a subtle different flavor to it. Go up to Mississippi and talk to the guy The Meadow he used to do "salt tastings," much like wine tasting, to give you an idea of the different flavors in each salt.
