That little bit of urine adds something really special: Portland reservoir urination raises few health or scientific concerns -- but it is pee | OregonLive.com

It is the only large metropolitan area in the country without fluoride in the water. We have really clean water here... I love it and am glad there's no fluoride.

It depends on where you are, but most water in the Portland area does come from the Bull Run Watershed, an area some 50 miles east, towards Mt. Hood. There is a natural lake there, plus two resovoirs that capture copious snow melt. This very clean and pure water is taken towards the city and purified for drinking. And that is correct, no fluoride in it. Hopefully there never will be. Fluoride helps fight cavities, but not by ingesting it. So if you want fluoride, brush your teeth and rinse with fluoride that can be purchased at just about any store.

Oregon Field Guide did a show on Bull Run.

Video: Season 21, Episode 2 | Watch Oregon Field Guide Online | OPB Video

The Oregon Experience did a longer show giving the history of Bull Run Water. It's a good show if you have time to watch it.

Fluoride has no effect on the taste of drinking water.

If you think fluoridated water has no beneficial effect on dental health, you might want to work at a dental office in Portland, and then one in the Midwest. You will be surprised, looking at hundreds of people's mouths.

Ripper: Mandrake?
Mandrake: Yes, Jack?
Ripper: Have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water?
Mandrake: Well, I can't say I have, Jack.
Ripper: Vodka, that's what they drink, isn't it? Never water?
Mandrake: Well, I-I believe that's what they drink, Jack, yes.
Ripper: On no account will a Commie ever drink water, and not without good reason.
Mandrake: Oh, eh, yes. I, uhm, can't quite see what you're getting at, Jack.
Ripper: Water, that's what I'm getting at, water. Mandrake, water is the source of all life. Seven-tenths of this Earth's surface is water. Why, do you realize that 70 percent of you is water?
Mandrake: Good Lord!
Ripper: And as human beings, you and I need fresh, pure water to replenish our precious bodily fluids.
Mandrake: Yes. (he begins to chuckle nervously)
Ripper: Are you beginning to understand?
Mandrake: Yes. (more laughter)
Ripper: Mandrake. Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rainwater, and only pure-grain alcohol?
Mandrake: Well, it did occur to me, Jack, yes.
Ripper: Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation. Fluoridation of water?
Mandrake: Uh? Yes, I-I have heard of that, Jack, yes. Yes.
Ripper: Well, do you know what it is?
Mandrake: No, no I don't know what it is, no.
Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face?

Don't worry, this is a dialogue of a Documentary. Keep fighting RED, better dead than RED.

We moved here last June from Ohio. Last May in Ohio, we took my 11yo son to the dentist for a semi-annual checkup, and no cavities were present. In February here in Portland, we took him to a dentist who said he had eight cavities, so we took him to a second dentist, last week, who confirmed that was the case. The second dentist said the lack of fluoride was likely a significant cause of the explosion in cavities in such a short time.

In addition, since the move here, both my other son (2) and wife (2) have been found to have had cavities after not having any in Ohio.

My mother recently told me that her hometown started putting fluoride in their water back when she was a kid, and after they did, she never had another cavity.

IDK much about fluoride, but it sure seems more than coincidental that cavities in my family stop/start when fluoride is introduced/removed. That, and I now have a $1,000 dental bill (above what insurance covers) from my son's cavity repairs to face, on top of the $300 already put out for my other son & wife.

On the other hand, I have not had a cavity in about thirty years, and my last checkups in Ohio (May, 2011) and Portland (last month), I still have none. Interestingly enough, I drink far more water than anyone in my family, although I'd say 70% of it is via bottled water, which may have fluoride in it (not sure). So either fluoride really isn't a big deal, or I'm just more resistant to cavities.
