I'm moving to Portland this summer and I'm super-excited. I will be working at a school in the downtown area -- nice and central -- so I'm pretty flexible as to where I can live. I've had my eye on the southeast -- maybe a nice little duplex or something. But recently I started checking out apartments right in town. The idea of living the urban life and biking or busing to work is very appealing. I'm a little worried, though, about the neighborhood feeling safe at night.

Does anyone know of a neighborhood where I could get this urban feeling and still feel ultra safe? Is there a family friendly version of this? (I have kids.) Or should I just stick to the southeast?

Without knowing your budget it is hard to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the reply. I'm feeling somewhat flexible on price because I'm willing to compromise on space. I could go up to $2000/month and could deal with 2 bedrooms but would prefer 3.

You should be able to find something nice for that price.

Maybe its just me but I don't walk around at night, anywhere. But then I am a woman. Walking in the early morning, before dawn, on the other hand wouldn't concern me.

Do you have thoughts about specific neighborhoods?

I'll give a plug for my neighborhood, Irvington. I rent a very nice remodeled old home that has 3 br, 2 bath, office, and half finished basement for $1900/month, so I'm sure you could find something in your budget. I work downtown and walk to the 7th st. Max stop and take the train for free (at least for now it's free). It's also an easy bike ride downtown as well. Irvington definitely has an urban feel along the edges, especially MLK and Broadway, also somewhat along Fremont st., the interior has beautifull (and expensive) historic old homes, but not a lot in the way of shops or restaurants. I have kids at Irvington elementary and I think it's a much better school than the test scores indicate. My kids and I walk to school every day and we frequently walk and ride our bikes all over the neighborhood. I've personally never felt unsafe, but that is a very subjective thing.

SW area - Goose Hollow or right above or around OHSU. Also, NW around NW 23rd.

Why not the Pearl? Frankly I consider most of downtown safe, minus the old town/chinatown area, which really isn't dangerous, but just feels kind of shady.

Biking into downtown from SE is a snap.

Nell, aren't there a number of families up around NW 23rd? I feel like I always see kids and parks in that area.

I'm actually quite drawn to the Pearl. Not sure if I can afford it, though. What about Lloyd center area? Mississippi? I'd love to come across someone who has experience with one of the big apartment buildings that posts on CL. Tupelo Alley, Asa in the Pearl, etc. I've read some reviews online but who knows who is writing them. Thanks for the suggestions.

My first choices for your description of "feeling safe walking at night" and closer-in would not include NE Portland. I think it's a great area ... just not somewhere I'd stroll at night. The area around Lloyd Center has some nice houses north of Broadway, but they're dark and bushy ... if you know what I mean. Makes me feel not as safe. The main streets ... no problem. But then, I wouldn't want to live on the main streets.

If I had my first pick, I'd go either for Johns Landing or for Sellwood/West Moreland. I like the small community feeling of both, and they have sufficient services to be walkable.
