When I moved here from Chicago years ago there were no similarities whatsoever. But I didn't expect to be coming to where I had been.

You probably won't find many similarities so you need to keep an open mind about what is offered in your new city. There may be no diners here exactly like those you are used to back East but there are plenty of great restaurants from which to choose.

Default Diane's, Fuller's, maybe Cup & Saucer

To me a place isn't a diner unless it has hash browns and cheap furnishings. Not sure why.

Diane's (5052 SE Foster Rd, Portland, OR 97206) is the closest thing to the diner I remember going to in Washington Heights as a kid. It's not 24 hours, though.

Someone else mentioned Fuller's (136 NW 9th Ave, Portland, OR 97209), and while it's not open at night, it's a decent diner. Two of the kinds of breads that they serve for toast are made on premises, and I would be sure to get one of them with your breakfast. Jam comes from a gallon sized Sysco can. Fuller's is a little overpriced for a diner, but we go there from time to time anyway. All stools, no tables.

Cup & Saucer is kind of a hippie diner. Pretty good food, several locations.

There are probably some old diners on major roads outside of Portland, like Barbur Blvd.

Diner's are technically in these modular type buildings, or frequently used to be old rail cars modified into restaurants.

As such, there is only one of those in all of Oregon (that I know of.) That would be the Blue Moon Diner in Aloha Oregon. The original Old Spaghetti Factory definitely built on that tradition.

On the other hand we have a lot of what I've always known as Coffee Shops. This would any place that is like a Diner, has a counter facing the kitchen, and booths. There used to be many more of them around then there are now. iHop, Denny's and Shari's all come out of that style. You'll see a lot of these places in small Oregon towns.

In case you think I'm being nit picky, there actually is a whole nomenclature behind the architectural styles behind these types of places.

In addition there are several "Save the Diner" groups on the East Coast and midwest who specialize in buying, remodeling (usually to original specs if possible,) and reselling the old Diner buildings.

Maybe. But isn't the question more about the food than the building?
