I'm considering a move to portland.. Jobs is NOT really a concern, I have my own small business making custom dvds and I cater to poor people.. Which I've heard there are LOTS of in portland.. The problem is I will need a VERY cheap room the day I leave the bus station at my arrival, maybe for a month before I can find a better room somewhere? Are there any really cheap hotels or motels downtown or within walking distance of downtown? In places like chicago and other cities I have seen rooms for men only that are 15-20$ bucks per night.. Anything like that here? Or any suggestions from locals? Any constructive help with be appreciated!...

In poorer times, I've stayed at the Westwind Apartments in Chinatown. Even then the cheapest was still $40/night. It was a pretty nasty place in general though, prostitutes, drug dealers, mentally ill people. Not to mention the rats, no real heating, shared bathrooms. No clue what they charge these days.

There are several other cheap hotels around downtown, but Google isn't finding names for me. I know a few are in the SW 12th and Stark area, more will be in Chinatown (close in NE)

I at Jake's happy hour last week and noticed a cheap walk-up hotel on the east side of SW 12th between Burnside and Stark. I have no information beyond the fact that Google Maps tells me that it's name is The Georgia but Google street view has the name Kent Hotel on the awning. The map also listed a retailer on the ground floor, Spartacus Leathers. I once walked in that store as the result of a bet by a friend...

Motel 6 charges about $40/dy at the two week rate and provides heat (A/C even) but you have to bring your own prostitute(s) and/or rats. What am I missing?

i think it's the kent hotel.

a block east of there is the joyce hotel, run by the same folks i believe.

either way. they have cheap rooms, but they are like transient/homeless shelters, basically.

i've seen them advertised as youth hostels before, lol.

To be honest, bad neighborhoods and shady places DON'T bother me, I've lived in some of the worst places in america.. Just 2 requirements, CHEAP, and not sharing a room... I could care less about roaches, rats, hookers(good for entertainment if I get bored anyway), or seedy neighborhoods.. Just a place low enough where I can figure out how to make the daily rent easily!

Check out the Joyce Hotel, rooms are about $27 a night, it's got a great location in the best area of downtown close to Powell's and a lot of good restaurants across from the Pearl District, and you'll get to meet some interesting folks on the down-and-out side of Portland.

Here's the real review of a guy who gave it 5 stars on a hotel website:

Quote:
The Joyce is my safe haven I have lived at the Joyce on and off for years. I am one of those strung out heroin addicts that call The Joyce home. Yes, this place has a LOT of "character". Even in my drug hazed mind, I found the place rather disgusting at times. But this was MY place, and MY people. And who else would accept me back again and again regardless of my lifestyle, my addiction, police arresting me on site for outstanding warrents, and leaving the room in far from desirable conditions for housekeeping?? No one else would have welcomed me back and treated me with the amount of compassion they did. That's what this place is about. Accepting you as you are, regardless -- and getting you off the streets for a night to have shelter. And I love Rico!!! That cat has brought me happiness on many a long, lonely night. So think what you may, but the Joyce has been my safe haven in this dreary existence I am spiraling through. — Anonymous (2011-03-22)

Does Portland have any YMCAs? And do they still let you stay there? Maybe that or look up hostels? Good luck, sounds exciting!
