Can you list some of the names? I can probably get the rest from there. There is a "marketing" company here in NJ that does the same thing. Same phone number but it has been associated to 6 different companies, all in the same field of business. They contacted me for a job a few years ago and after I interviewed with them I told them what I had found and never heard from them again.

I have a renter property here, as of a couple of years ago. I'm an independent landlord who always tries to be fair, follow the law and respect the tenant's privacy. I returned the full security deposit to my last tenant, even though some of the things were sketch. I'm not out to gouge anyone and I think you may run into different standards with a property management company, or with an apt complex, or even different landlords. I dislike how there are people out there that say all landlords are greedy when that just isn't true. Me, I just want someone who can take care of my house, expect ordinary wear and tear, but if things are left clean and in reasonable condition then I'm cool with that.

For every horror landlord story there's probably equally horrific tenant stories. I've had flaky people call on my house then not show up, with me making a trip over there for nothing. This past week was following up on a tenant who filled out an app, called his references, and ultimately offered it to him only to be told his wife wasn't comfortable with how nice my house was (has new carpets, other flooring, newer windows, etc). Now I'm back to square one after wasting nearly a week.

Being on the other side of things I would say both sides should do their homework, and ultimately go with what seems comfortable--if there are red flags up front then pay attention.

Seriously I would love a good tenant, and I think it goes both ways!

It is definitely hard to find that perfect match. When we were first married it was just us and plant. So finding an apartment was easy. Now, we will be selling our first home and moving across the country. Ideally I would like a 3-4 bedroom house for rent with a nice landlord that may come over for dinner once in a while. Our budget is $1500 a month.

BUT it is harder than I thought now that we have a toddler and 3 cats. And we are not giving away our cats. They are part of our family. Well that and we bought a $400 Litter Robot and I would be pissed if I didn't have any cats to make use of it

So she didn't like that the house was too nice???? That is the silliest thing I have ever heard! The only thing I could think of is with a nicer house it will be harder for her to hide any damage she does.

It will definitely be weird going back to renting for 2 years before we decide where to buy a house. Thank you all for your advice. and in September we will be Portlanders!

I think you'll be able to find a good house in that price range. Just probably won't be in the super trendy neighborhoods. I would look at Creston/Kenilworth, Brooklyn, Woodstock, and Sellwood neighborhoods, which can get you pretty close to downtown and probably get a decent house in your price range. There are these kinds of properties on craigslist quite a bit.
