Judging by the OP's other posts, maybe he should stop blaming everyone else for his problems and work to make himself a better job/relationship candidate.

It's no picnic for trying to meet a nice guy either. But other than that, I find it to be a great place to live. But then again, I live in Vancouver.

The one thing I would suggest to anyone looking to move here is to watch the employment ads online to get a feel for what type of and how many jobs are available in your field. I also would look for a short term rental first and then something more permanent once you have a feel for your commute. You don't want to end up stuck in that cute, oh-so-affordable duplex in Gresham you just love when you land a job in Hillsboro!

The bottom line is those who've been here for a while (14 of the last 16 years for me; left from 2003-2005) can share our experiences and offer practical advice but if someone is bound and determined to move here, they are going to.

I believe you have this exactly backwards....
I must agree. Portland is one of the most livable cities in the US. Jobs are available, and if you are single and employed, many of the young ladies are shall we say, available. You can find housing for any income, and even the welfare is not that bad. In fact it is better than most states. There are both conservitives and liberals. Blacks, Mexicans, Japanise and even Middle Easterners are welcome and well represented. There is an abundence of food tases for anyone, and the arts, sciences, and entertainment venues abound.

Actually it was about Gold Miners and Wagon Trains. You left out farming, but no it was not the wild west. It was free land and opportunity, and it was a First American occupied wilderness.

Oh yes, you can still find the Armed men gallivanting in many parts of Oregon, with and without horses.

Only southern (Jacksonville, really) and eastern Oregon were about gold mining. Portland was more about wagon trains, lumberjacks, and sailors. And farmers everywhere.

Don't forget about the gold mining around Detroit Lake.

Also there have been lots of rumors, legends, and "quiet" prospecting in the northern coast range around the Nehalem River...

Quite a bit of gold mining activity in Southwestern Oregon.

An almost four ounce nugget was recently found on the upper Rogue River:

At 1700 bucks per ounce, that's a hell of a find!
That's more than 6500 bucks held in the palm of your hand.

Maybe HawkJ will chime in. He lives in those parts.

Yes, yes.. I miss spoke about the gold mining part. I'm well aware of the gold mining prospects and history in Oregon as I have a partial share in a hard rock mine in Eastern Oregon, have my own claim, and have memberships in three clubs that have access to claims all over the state.

And there's also the Bohemia mining area to the east of Cottage Grove.

Keep in mind that we were on the gold standard then. Those folks were mining money.

Personally I love Portland, it's home to me. Yes it has it's problems, but what place doesn't? You just have to learn what you can live with and what you can't. People can move there if they want, but I don't think anyone should go anywhere and expect it to be an escape or utopia of some sort. They're still going to have a job and whatnot, it's not like they're going on holiday or anything.
You can diss on California transplants all you want, but keep in mind more than half your population is from there. Even if you were born there, it's still likely that your parents or grandparents grew up someplace else.
