We will be driving down to San Francisco soon. We are moving that way so we don't have a lot of time to stop along the way (i.e. I would love to take the coast down, but dont think we'd have the time). Since I'll have my two little ones with me...ages 5 and 2 (and my husband) I'm guessing that we will have to stop somewhere halfway to rest and let them loose/get their energies out.

Any suggestions of a fun itinerary - or a place to stop (and stay overnight?) along the way? Perhaps something to see/get out and explore really quickly or a scenic drive or something...and where should we call it halfway to stay overnight on our way down?

Thank you!

Lots of good stops, depends on how much time you have. I usually drive all the way to Ashland after work and stay there or in Grants Pass for the night before finishing up in SF.

The Ghost Town of Golden is a nice side trip stop. You can't camp there, but it's only a few miles off of I-5 and is a good place to let the kids run around. There are several great rest stops along I-5 in general.

Another option is to head over to Wild Life Safari in Winston Oregon (just outside of Roseburg.) There is an RV park there, but no tents. There are a couple of good dining options in downtown Roseburg, especially for breakfast.

I vote Ashland as well. If you have a few hours, the kids would probably really enjoy ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum - HOME

If lodging expense is an issue, you'll probably find it cheaper in Medford than Ashland, but there are deals to be found in both cities by looking online.

Keep in mind that Ashland has a tax on restaurant food. Pack a lunch for an Ashland stop.

Y'all might like the Applegate Trail Museum & covered bridge in Sunny Valley, right off I-5. Google

How much is the tax? How much of a difference do you think this would make on a typical lunch? $1-2? If you would otherwise eat at a restaurant there, you'd really pack a lunch to avoid the tax? I guess OP could eat in Medford?

5% according to the City's website.

"One percent is used to purchase open space for parks and four percent is used to offset the costs associated with the building of the new wastewater treatment plant." It was extended in '09 until 2030.

Another good tourist stop is the Oregon Vortex and Mystery House.

I remember visiting the Mystery House when I was a kid, it was great fun.
