Hey all,

I've been looking through CL food/bev ads for Portland and I'm seeing "Current OLCC permit required". A quick Google search brought me to the link below. Is this an actual, legal requirement to serve alcohol in Oregon? Certifications and such are merely resume boosters where I live now, not required, but nice to have for some (ServSafe and TIPS being two examples). Also, does anyone know where the "ASE" courses are administered?

Thanks for any insight/information.

OLCC permits are required to serve alcohol in Oregon. They are not "nice to have" here. The courses are administered all around the area. I (at the age of 17) went to one that was in the bar of a well known high end dining establishment here in PDX

Like Hamellr said, they are a legal requirement. Some businesses will give you a temporary permit while you get your permanent card. I believe the class is 4 hours or so and then you have to pass a test. Oregon also has food service permits but I'm not sure who is required to have them.

Don't sweat it - if you can spell your name you can pass the test. It's more a formality than anything else. Like a government mandated TIPS.

No permit, No job. If you over serve, or serve to under age you will lose the permit. There are other violations that can cause you to lose the permit also. You do have to take the course. Oregon also fines the server as well as the owner for violations. The one I know of that was recent happened to a Texas Hold 'em player I know from the league. The Bars license expired by five days. All the barmaids (Servers) who were on shift recieved $3,000 fines each. Owner refused to pay the fines for them, so she quit. Salem Bar about 3 months ago. (No, I will not tell anyone the name of the establishment.)
