I think that the Mac and Cheese being "trendy" is just a rediscovery in some areas when it literally fell out of favor. I have noticed its a tradition and featured as a side dish in a lot of places (mainly BBQ) where I am living at this time. Regardless it certainly has a fan base.

Try it at Shanghai Tunnel. It's bomb. Don't try and eat the whole serving of it at one time though. Montage is obviously a viable option too.

Years ago, Mac and Cheese was common and inexpensive. Something to be found at a cafeteria and or old lunch counters. "Fell onto obscurity" on menus along with the places that served it.

Anyone remember "Eve's Buffet?

I paid 13$ for an arguably fancy serving at a restaurant in September.

I remember "Eve's Buffet." You could always depend upon mac and cheese being served there but I never had the nerve to try it. I used to eat there a couple of times a week.

Huge thumbs up for this place. Not only is their mac and cheese terrific, it is literally two filling meals for less than $10. Also, they have IMO some really nice artwork on the walls.

Some Abbys Pizza places have a lunch buffet that includes mac 'n cheese. Theirs is pretty good, with lots of cheese. Izzy's also has mac 'n cheese, but it's about a 2 on a scale of 1-10, really not worth eating.

Oh yeah, totally... The first time I visited Portland as a teenager in the 90s, people were telling me you had to go to Montage for some mac and cheese. I haven't been there for a few years, but I remember a lot of late night dining trips there over the last decade.

I think in a lot ways, the whole mac and cheese trend recently--along with things like grilled cheese food carts, is sort of a whole trend of sort of lowbrow comfort food that is kind of a reaction to all the other recent food trends of more eclectic high brow stuff like "Pan-Asian cuisine" or "Nuevo Latino". It's kind of a back to basics American culture thing that people can enjoy---I think for some people it's kind of reminiscent of their childhoods as well.
