I've lived here all my life, and never heard anything pretty much west of the Mississippi called an Expressway.

I have no idea what the OP has in mind when asking about expressways. But FYI, if you are referring to Mississippi as a state/river, there are expressways in California. They are usually around 40-50 mph and are major arterial roads to provide speedier roads to move a lot of traffic with signal lights that flow pretty smoothly and favorably for the expressway. For visualization purposes, it would be somewhat comparable to much of SE McLoughlin Blvd. (the Portland stretch) but just calling it SE McLoughlin "Expressway".

Dang. Your post just jogged a memory. And made me a liar. When the highway (224) was built in Milwaukie connecting McLoughlin to 82nd, we called it the Expressway. Don't know if that's official or what (we lived near it).

Which makes sense, given your description. And I'm sure they probably exist west of the Mississippi ... but what I said was, I hadn't heard of them. But, again, like I said, I was wrong about even that.

Really, I am aware I don't know everything.
