Roosters are not allowed within City Limits of Portland (Or Beaverton.)

But... there are some guerrilla roosters around to be used as breeding stock. They're actually much quieter then most people think, if a rooster is crowing there is something wrong in the way of predators or rivals.

We've looked into getting a chicken, but honestly I can't eat enough eggs. Nor do I want to have to deal with the butchering part anymore. Although I sure could use the compost that would be generated.

I have a friend who lives in North Portland. She has about almost an acre of yard. Only a very tiny portion has a few veggies growing there. The rest is a beautiful English Garden with roses and little pathways and all sorts of flowers and benches and little ponds. It's really a joy to stop in.

The people who lived there before her kept chickens but she got rid of the coops. She grew up in a house in Aloha where her mom had the same type of garden only larger. So she is carrying on the tradition. I don't know how many people in Portland have this type of thing but there is a garden walk every spring in Ladd's Addition that is supposed to showplace garden's like this. I don't believe they have chickens or veggies in them.

I think this too is a very Portland type thing. I remember when I first moved in my present neighborhood, people grew wildflowers in their front lawns. I thought that was so pretty. I wish that style would come back again.

I think these things are kind of fads. This year chickens, next year, who knows? Maybe cows! When I lived in Tigard some years back, I remember seeing a few goats around.
