I don't see how trader joes is some sort of Portland icon that seems to make you officially a portlander. It's not unique to Portland, it wasn't founded in Portland and it surely isn't a store most portlanders shop at on a regular basis.

I agree, TJ is in no way a Portland icon at all. I believe they started in California. According to Wikipedia:

"The first store named "Trader Joe's" opened its doors in 1967. This store, on Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena, California, remains in operation."

I don't get Burgerville, The prices are astronomical. Had the chicken sandwich, medium fries and medium drink for $8.04, I fell over when they said $8.04. Hell, I could have gone to Sharis'. Taste wise it was good, but it was worth 5 dollars tops. I do like the slick Pininfarrina Coke machines though.

OK I totally agree with this. I just went (god I have to get out walking SOON) for dinner and for a whopping $13 I got one chicken sandwich (not even the deluxe!), one regular waffle fries, two dipping sauces and a large smoothie. I mean, that should have cost $8, not $13...

Ok, sue me, I didn't pick the best example of "local", but the point was, if one is making as big a break as a trans-continental move.. why not check into the overall more 'conscious" style of eating and snacking here. I'll leave it here.

Hi njpkl,

We live in NJ and commute to Portland for business every other month. I just shop at Trader Joes. They have them in Nj and Portland. I prefer Trader Joe's string cheese and its cheaper.

Believe it or not, there are people on the opposite coast who are self-aware and believe in eating and promoting healthy and sustainable foods. I'll leave it there as well.

I think BurgerVille is overpriced too but their seasonal goods are worth it. I love the asparagus in the spring and the chocolate hazelnut shakes right now.

And their blackberry shakes in season. They offer it as a smoothie as well.

BurgerVille is expensive but the meat is organic and they have delightful offerings like salad with salmon. If I want a regular, cheap, burger I go to Burger King.
