We plan on stopping for the night in redding and timing it so we hit the passes around noon. That way we will know if it's closed or not and if its not, the roads will have been driven on and hopefully be clear. If we have to stay another night in redding, I'm sure the property management place will understand! I hope so anyway!

Any tips about living in sellwood? That's where we'll be and aside from seeing a movie in their amazing old theatre once we haven't explored the area. We have 3 young kids and I have read/heard nothing but great things about it!

Sellwood is a nice neighborhood. There are some great dining options there. Cool little antique stores (not as many as there used to be though,) you have easy access to a couple of good parks, including Oaks Amusement Park. Now that they're rebuilding the Sellwood bridge living there isn't as precarious as it was before. And New Seasons has a market in the area, so it's easy to get your organic shopping done. As long as you're off one of the main streets, you'll have mostly quiet neighborhoods.

Bad part is that you don't have easy access to the highways, so commuting will be a pain unless you're going downtown. You're somewhat isolated from the rest of the city over all. House prices seem to be on the high side to me, because it is a desirable area to live in.

I'm not sure if I personally would like living there or not, though.

Oh, I think Sellwood would be a great place to live. It's very compact, and very walkable. You've got easy access to services. It seems a very friendly little community.

The one downside to it is, grocery stores in the area are small and tend to be a bit overpriced. People who live in Sellwood/Moreland that I know, go out to Milwaukie to do their grocery shopping.

If you have not already, check out "Share-It Square" at 9th and Sherrett- Share-It Square - Great Public Spaces | Project for Public Spaces (PPS)

One of the coolest things I have seen in the city.

I lived in the Sellwood neighborhood for many years.
It is everything the above posters have mentioned.

One caution though, the typical house in Sellwood is small, and yards are small.
The reason for this is, way back when, Sellwood was a blue collar community serving the wood products company that was located by the Sellwood bridge.
Houses were small and affordable. A 50' x 50' lot size was the norm.
Some of them could be considered cottages. Very cute.
In the early nineties, it became a very desirable neighborhood to live in, and real estate prices skyrocketed.

I bought a house there (16th and Rex) in the very early eighties for 40k and sold it a few years ago for almost ten times that.
If you are expecting a huge house (not to say there aren't any in Sellwood) with a big yard, it will be hard to find one on the market and it will be very expensive when you do...

Were not looking for lots of space, and already have a duplex rented. thanks for the info! We have a 1 year lease at this place so that will give us plenty of time to decide where and when we want to buy a home. Thanks again for the reply!
