Oregon and California have about the same number of smokers with a larger percentage of the population smoking in Oregon. California has more smokers overall. Both are at the bottom of the list nationwide.

Interesting. I would like to see a county-by-county percentage map as I can assure you there would be quite a difference between the LA/OC area and greater Portland. I believe those numbers are accurate, and it's reassuring, honestly, because I really don't want to end up somewhere with a ton of smokers (3/5th of the family is asthmatic). Perhaps it is just a visibility thing?

It's really not that different. I think you're right. The stigmatization of smoking down this way pushes it into the cracks and crevices, and it's very much more open up there.

According to Gallup, Oregon is the 10th lowest percentage of smokers. California is #2, but it's only a few percentage points.

There is a definitive trend as of 2010: Tobacco Use | Greater Portland Pulse

But, it does look like trends are going upwards, especially among children and teenagers: Youth smoking: stalled progress in Oregon | OregonLive.com

Most of the Portland area is typical American suburbia. Plenty of SUVs, and toward the more outlying areas, there's also a good share of younger guys with modified trucks - lifts, swamper tires, and so on.

Just visit the parking lot of the IKEA by the airport - you'll see. And that's inside of Portland city limits.

I remember once seeing a map showing the consentration of Subaru owners across the U.S. and I think Portland had the one of the highest consentrations.
