What are the some of the options for health/organic grocery stores in the Portland area?

In the Northeast, there's wegmans, which are large and have lots of organic options, cafes, hot food, etc. and most everything isn't too expensive.

Are there a lot of good options in the Portland area?

Whole Foods is ubiquitous.

New Seasons Markets and Zupan's Markets are local.

There are an incredible number of options. Even the big local chain, Fred Meyer, has a large organic/natural selection in most of its stores. Besides the stores mentioned above, there are lots of independent groceries, such as Local Choice in the Pearl District.

There are many local co-ops, such as People's and Alberta- see here Food Co-ops | PortlandLocalFood.com.

There are dozens of farmer's markets, at least a few every day of the week during the growing season and a few all-year-round- Portland Farmers Market :: Other Portland Metro Markets.

There are many pick-your-own farms; a good source is here- Buy Local, Fresh Produce with Tri-county | Tri-County Farm

And we have dozens of CSAs- check here- Welcome

I like New Seasons even though the prices almost get into Whole Foods levels of cost.

Actually one of my favorite groceries however is Uwajimaya over in Beaverton--it's a Japanese/Asian grocery and they've got great selections of meat and Asian vegetables and an amazing seafood section... I go to a lot of the Asian or other international markets, Fubonn on 82nd is a little more disorganized, but it's good to go to if you're making any kind of Asian dish and can't make it to Beaverton.

Also Barbur World Foods on SW Barbur--it's owned by Lebanese guy(he owns the restaurant Ya Hala on SE Stark) and it's got all kind of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern foods--and it's got a great deli and meat department-and the spice section is amazing and produce is pretty good too. Really interesting mix of stuff--and a great wine section with a ton of wines from lesser known wine regions of Europe/Middle East.

Those two aren't necessarily organic or health food stores, but they are both great for foodies...

I wouldn't patronize Whole Foods while there are Zupan's and New Season's around. Unfortunately, both are over my budget but New Season's is a special treat every now and then. I like Uwajimaya when I can get there. Trader Joe's has kind of disappointed me since they stopped selling some of my favorite items but I still like them.

Safeway is the closest supermart to me so they get my business. They have some good local stuff and I subscribe to their online coupons. I like Freddy's too. I like having the convenience of neighborhood supermarkets I can bus or walk to.

Not a supermarket but I like Kruger's year round farmstand on Hawthorne Blvd. Next block is Grand Cental Bakery.

Beaverton seems to be collecting a ton of new Organic groceries. On TV Highway there is a new places called "Rose's" which mostly deals in local produce. Prices are pretty good, below New Seasons, but more then Farmer's Markets on average.

The old Bed Bath and Beyond Location on TV Highway is also getting a make over. There is a sign outside saying "Natures Groceries," but I have not seen an opening date yet. They gutted the building and are remodeling the heck out of it.

Portland Fruit Company has a location here, and of course we have one of the better Farmer's Markets in town.

Interesting. I was wondering what was going to happen with that place.
