Hi everyone,

I know this is a bit of a strange question. For some reason I was thinking the other day about a trip I took to Portland in the late 1990's. I remember staying in a Days Inn hotel downtown, but I cannot remember exactly where it was located, and I am positive that it is no longer in service. Does anyone have any idea of what became of this hotel? I remember that my experience there was so terrible that we made it through one night before moving over to the Hilton!

Thank you for your responses!

I imagine you are referring to the hotel which was refurbished and is now called "Hotel Rose"

Lived at Hotel Rose 6 years ago for a week during repairs to our house. Loved it there.

But was Day's Inn on the waterfront (as that's where Rose is)?

Thank you for the replies! It is indeed the Hotel Rose. For some reason I didn't recall that the hotel was located around the riverfront. I'm surprised that you guys were able to figure out what I was looking for from my lackluster description. It looks like the hotel has improved tremendously since the last time that I stayed there. It was a real dive back in 1999, but that is to be expected from Days Inn hotels.

I don’t think the Hotel Rose is the former Days Inn. I think the former Days Inn was refurbished (extensively) and renamed Hotel Modera, then very recently sold and renamed Hotel Zags (awful name). I stayed there around 2003 when I was house hunting in Portland from San Francisco. Since I was out all day scoping around houses and neighborhoods it made no sense to pay a lot for a hotel room. It was clean and basic. To illustrate how much Portland has changed: I ended up buying a 2500 sq ft mid century modern house in a solid SW Portland neighborhood for $240k. Now homes in my neighborhood are $800k and up. Unfortunately though the home values have skyrocketed I think the city has declined in nearly every other way.

Thank you for the reply. You might be right. Looking at exterior shots of the Hotel Zags and the aforementioned property near the water, it seems that both properties have very similar styling characteristics. Judging from what I can see on Google Maps, the Hotel Zags appears to resemble the image that has been engrained into my memory.
