I'm considering a move to portland in the next year, and was wondering about the job market in my field. Would anyone happen to know what the job market is like in the social work/mental health field? I just graduated with a masters degree in social work in May and am currently a mental health/substance abuse counselor.

It's tight. Portland's a small city and plenty of people graduate each year. Jobs are out there, but the high end ones are very competitive. CNRG has a variety of listings to look at.

The problem is our Community Colleges are turning out "Welfare to Work" Social workers at the rate of 100 to 120 per semester. Most of those with Bachelors or Masters end up in Salem.

Would love to see your data. "Most end up in Salem."

In addition, there are no "social workers" with a 2 year degree so the community colleges are not turning them out. It's illegal to call yourself a social worker in Oregon without a license (which requires a minimum four year degree).

Only PSU has a MSW program and it's on the quarter system so there goes your "semester" comment.

"Anyone using the title “social worker” in Oregon must hold one of the four licenses offered by the Board: RBSW, LMSW, CSWA, LCSW"

Only partially true.

Please explain how it's only partially true.

Please. That's like saying you don't need a degree to be a teacher, because you can get a job "teaching" at Learning Tree (are they still around) without one.

OP, I suspect that social worker type jobs are all government jobs. The governments here mostly have hiring freezes, which isn't promising for your chances.

However, most (probably all) of the governments and universities have websites that list their employment opportunities. So, I suggest that you get on-line and see if anything is listed as "taking applications" and start applying.

There are several thousand 2 year degree "Non" Clinical Social Workers in Oregon.

"Standards have gotten more rigorous for Oregon’s social workers. In 2011, licensing became mandatory for clinical social workers – a person now has to have a license to carry out job duties that fall under the scope of duty of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

At the same time, Oregon implemented two new voluntary credentials for non-clinical social workers: Registered Baccalaureate Social Worker (RBSW) and Licensed Master’s Social Worker (LMSW). They’re voluntary in one sense of the word – a person doesn’t have to have a license to carry out duties that fall outside the Board’s definition of clinical social worker. However, a person does need a license to use the title “social worker”!
Beginning in 2013, it became mandatory for social workers at all credentialing levels to pass a licensing exam. A jurisprudence exam (open book) is also required (Click Here to learn more about the recent changes for Social Worker Licensure in Oregon)."
