This is pretty interesting. It talks about the Missoula Floods (caused by meltwater at the end of the last Ice Age) that shaped the Columbia Gorge. If an event of this magnitude happened today, "Portland, Oregon would be under several hundred feet of water."

I love going to Crown Point and contemplate the amazing transformation the Missoula Floods did on our landscape - how they carved the Gorge, etc. It's also why we have erratics around here, such as the one in McMinnville, and a large reason why the Willamette Valley is so fertile. Another area that the floods did a number to are the scablands of eastern WA.

And yes, you are right, if we had those now, the vast majority of Portland wouldn't exist.

There's another large glacial erratic on the campus of Lane Community College in Eugene. The iceberg carrying that one really floated a long way!

Where is Crown Point? We just took a field trip to Rowena Pointe. It almost felt like we were in Spain, with all the dry brush.

You went past it on your way to Rowena.

On the Historic Columbia Highway, just east of Corbett, and HIGH above I-84 a bit east of Troutdale. Google it - beautiful vistas. And extremely windy at times - such as around this time of year.

What is the name of the large waterfall that was supposedly 1000+ feet high during this time frame? I thought it was part of Abert Rim, but I can not seem to find it.

Are you thinking Dry Falls?

Abert Rim would've been far beyond the reach of the Missoula Floods.
