They're all different so there's no good or bad, it's what you're looking for. I suggest looking at your neighborhood school first. Charters aren't the end all be all. They have their own issues too.

Good luck with the searching Jen, I have been doing lots of my own research for the future child my wife and I haven't even created yet. I will have to agree with oldintype, don't rule out the neighborhood public schools, depending on where you are the elementary schools are getting better and a good number of them are doing good and some of the high schools are really starting to improve.

Hi! Could you tell me where to look for good public schools or neighborhoods? We're thinking about moving from Charlottesville, VA. I'm a nurse and need to be within commutable (hopefully by bike) to a hospital. We have an 8 year old as well. Thanks!

I'd say it'd be best to look for the job first. Housing comes second.

Beaverton has some excellent neighborhood schools. Use the Beaverton School website to map out school feeds. My hubby and I used the PPS site for Portland schools when we moved here. We bought our house in a school feed we found desirable. We have been thrilled with our school and the surrounding community. Renting first is a great idea, however. Good luck to you!

Just my 2cents, but here it goes. I use to rely on greatschools.net totally. but then, I began to research further into the statistics behind the ratings with regards to how they are graded per testing (here in california that is) then I actually just jumped into a middle school for my son because of what they offered when I toured the school. And this is even with Greatschools.net giving it a very low score on testing. I am glad I didn't rely 100% on greatschools.net and I don't think anyone else should take it as is all that ends all type of ratings etc. I'm not saying negatively about greatschools, I think it has some good stuff on there, but do your homework in person with the school that you are considering or might consider and visit it. talk with the principle... go more than once.
If I would have listened to greatschools, my son would now be in a 40 student classroom setting being weighed down with 4 hours of homework nightly, no parent participation and barely if at all field trips, and apparently a lot of bullying going on there with the principle not really engaged. however, greatschool said it was a 8/10 and parents reviews were outstanding...
the school he is in now has about 25 kids (still a lot to my standards, but that's a whole different discussion topic) he has a personal netbook, has about an hour of homework nightly, creates power point presentations and is learning how to type, maneuver all the MS operational window programs, art and field trips. and this was rated 4/10. And my son is just in 6th grade.
