I live in Burlington, Vermont and I have to say I love it here. Over the years
I've had the opportunity to travel all across the country. Very few cities
have made me feel jealous that I haven't had the opportunity to live there, but Portland is absolutely one of them. Yes I noticed more homeless than I'm used to, I suppose because the (fairly) balmy weather makes it possible to live outside year round. Name any city though and I'll be able to tick off several problems. Cool people, cool restaurants, cool neighborhoods, gorgeous surroundings...You've got it good Portlanders.

The highly unusual ratio of stratus to cumulus clouds over Portland pretty much guarantee rain on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. I presume you knew about this before moving there.

I thought the recent constitutional amendment barring gays from marrying was the work of the OCA just not using that name?

Every city has negatives, every person has their own feelings about what is positive and negative and the right to express them.

I agree, but if someone is really unhappy, to the point of only seeing negatives, then that person SHOULD move--life is too short to be unhappy all the time or miserable in his/her surroundings. There's somewhere for everyone.

Well, we here on Long Island proudly boast both Joey Buttafuoco and Amy Fisher. So it is a toss up as to which one is the tackiest.

I agree. Tonya was the most exciting thing to happen in Portland in the past 15 years.

lets see....the biggest negative about Portland for me....the fact that my ex-husband lives there! lol
nah, Id say, for me, all the people on their bicycles really freak me out. I mean, its awesome for them to be so "green" and terrific they are exersizing and being healthy and whatnot, but i have had some folks on their bikes a bit.....well....aggressive on the road. little to no warning before swinging out in front of my car, stuff like that. Im scared to death Im gonna hit one someday! Besides, seeing all of them all decked out in their bright fancy outfits, heads down low and pedeling ferouciously intimadates the heck out of me! lol
other than that, and a few other minor things that I can either work around or ignore, I think Portland is pretty darn awesome!

I'll take the rain over snow and ice and freezing my ass off in the midwest!

It's not too bad right now, thankfully. The anit-business policies of the city council and the ridiculous taxes definitely don't help.

Politics in Portland is extremely liberal. This might be a positive if you are a liberal.
Yes, extremely liberal and a lot of the stupidity in this city can be traced directly back to the liberal mentality.

Schools are underfunded in Portland. Public schools in Portland have had to shut down early because of a lack of funding.
Underfunded? Hardly! When they're spending around $10,000 per student, per year that's hardly underfunded. It's called poor money management. How come midwest states like iowa can spend around $6500 - $7000 per student, per year and be ranked so high and Portland spends $4000 more and turns out idiots by the bus load?

And I agree that traffic is out of control. This is what happens when the the downtown idiots would rather spend money on trams, MAX, Tri-Met and bike trails instead of building highways and roads we really need.
