If you need to be there before the tram starts, you'll have to take the bus, or drive. Streetcar also doesn't start running until 5:30 (7:30 on weekends). But it runs until 11:30 (10:30 on Sundays). Or there is an employee shuttle, but I don't know the details of that. When it runs, or to where.

Don't forget, though, that if you're taking the streetcar ... that's going to cost. There may be an employee subsidized transit pass you can get, though. Looks like OHSU has a pretty good transportation info page here.

There's a lot of new housing development on the south waterfront. In the near future that may be a desirable area for people specifically trying to get up the hill - quick walk right to the tram.

If it were me I'd go for Goose Hollow or even Southwest Hills. Much of Goose Hills is still walkable to downtown/Nob Hill/food carts/Jeld-wen field, etc., so I wouldn't worry about missing out on the scene being there.

As others have noted, Portland is generally very easy to get around other than during rush hour - though I-5 and to a lesser extent 205 have congestion issues on weekends as well, but you don't need either of those for getting to 'the scene' in the city or east side.

If I were you I would live in The Pearl or Goose Hollow. Since much of your life is also spent not working, I would want to be in walking distance of movies, restaurants, down town shopping, MAX and be around other single professionals. But hey, that's just my two cents. Good luck to you! OHSU is a wonderful hospital IMO.

Yeah! Thanks Yankeemama!

But isn't/won't life be drastically different between The Pearl and Goose Hollow? I picture Goose Hollow as a little more family oriented and The Pearl as the hip, young, vibrant place to be?
I want to live beside a nice gym also!

I DO want to be around other single professionals...I was looking into it and it seems as though mostly students live on the hill near the hospital?

Any other advice would be much appreciated!

It is close to OHSU, but it's at the base of the hill. You may be able to climb the hill on foot to Terwilliger and OHSU, but to drive you have to go a ways north or south. That section of Barbur Blvd. is wide and busy, with no traffic lights for a while, so traffic is moving at a good clip. If you can live with those conditions, this might indeed be perfect.

PS. Goose Hollow and the Pearl are pretty close to each other - I don't think life would be drastically different. The Pearl is more urban, Goose Hollow has more trees. But you can get from one to the other easily.

Don't be concerned about missing "the scene" depending on where you live. Portland social life does not depend on your neighbors. Instead, people make friends based on common interests and activities. You sound like a pretty interesting person, so I'm betting you make friends quickly. Portland music is everywhere, not just the symphony, but world class jazz, bands you can dance to, and people who just love making music. Drop in to an open mic and be friendly. If you can cook, musicians are always hungry. When I was single I used to host a Sunday brunch at my house, and it got the rep of being an "in" place because well known artists showed up for pancakes and eggs.

The way to be a part of "the scene" in Portland is to get around. Help out with community theater. Go to mutual interest groups. You will find your people. One of the most interesting women I ever met was an X-ray crystallographer at OHSU, songwriter and performer. Wherever she went *was* the scene.

Thanks. I am getting the picture a little better.

Couldn't I live there and just walk to the tram? Free for employees apparently?

I am definitely not wanting any roomies. Willing to spend about $1200/1300 max max. Would be a + to have good public transport (to work mainly) and also + to be able to park/store my car.

Very excited to move to Portland!

Okay, so The Pearl is a bit more yuppie but Goose Hollow has a mixed demographic which reminds me of my hometown, San Francisco. The NW 23rd area has some apartments in the hood and it very busy, tons of restaurants/bars, shops. Reminds me of S.F. also. Those three neighborhoods are in walking distance of each other. I do think staying on the West side of town would be the ideal situation for your needs.

That involves crossing the wide, busy street I mentioned. Certainly possible, I see people do it often - but stressful. Also, you'd be walking ~10 blocks heading away from OHSU to get to the tram. Looking at the listing & map again, it looks like there's a footpath or stairs at Whitaker St, on your side of Barbur, that leads to Terwilliger, which can get you to Campus Drive and the hospitals. You'd probably have an easier time just walking straight to OHSU instead of to the tram.
