I would have voted against. Cannibalism.
The placenta is an organ that connects the developing fetus to the uterine wall to allow nutrient uptake, waste elimination, and gas exchange via the mother's blood.
It is expunged as waste.

Picture a mom triumphantly taking home her placenta, invoking Charlie Sheen 'WINNING!'... then a dog steals it and runs..

LOL! Meow.

Being a cat, and a Siamese one at that, she probably would have said "None of your friggin' business."

Okay, so I have to admit, I got curious and looked this up on the Internet. I read that there are a few speculations but the main reason why mom cats do this is to destroy any evidence that there are kittens present in case there are any predators around. They clean up everything including all the afterbirth for this reason and it's so instinctual that even our indoor, pampered domesticated kitty-mommas will do this.

So I guess the powers that be in our fair state who decided to allow new mothers to take home their placenta are keeping them safe from predators. You just never know who might be lurking around those maternity wards these days.

If others want to do this, for whatever reason, I like that the law enables them to do it. Like with many other things, just because I don't want to do it, or because I think it's weird, is no reason to impose my beliefs on others.

What does it hurt?

Whatever floats your boat, I guess. After grueling child births, all I wanted to do with the placentas was say goodbye and hold my babies.

Default Portlandia

Is there a Portlandia episode regarding this?

The "Suprise, it's my son's foreskin-sushi" episode.

Oh I hope they do.

Back in either the late-60's or early-70's when actress Barbara Hershey was so briefly married to David Carradine, I remember reading her comment about them burying her placenta and then planting an apple tree over it so that their son would "eat fruit nourished from his mother".

After having a good laugh, I wrote that up to drugs.
