I think you should look for something centrally located such as in zip code 97205, 97210 or 97209. What you need to be aware of is that the rent you are quoted will not include a parking space, be sure to factor in that cost as well.

Given the shortage of rental housing you will probably be required to sign a one year lease. The apartment buildings in my neighborhood (Goose Hollow) are managed by well respected firms. You could have a personality conflict with a particular staff member but, basically, your housing needs will be met.

Verify that you have an adequate wi-fi speed (usually Comcast, unfortunately).

Oh, with a 'rug rat' you should check out Playgroup « Friendly House

There is a new, massive apartment complex that went up in Sellwood, near the corner of Tacoma and 17th. I don't know their rates, but they just started renting out.

That is walking distance to great parks, shops, etc; however Tacoma is a busy road. Parking will be rough. But if it's short-term, you'll be in a good spot for public transportation.

I've lived in Sellwood, in a corner south of Tacoma Boulevard, for 13 years. Love it, but am leaving the state. That is, if I can get my house painted, re-carpeted and landscaped to my agent's approval. Pain in the butt, I tell ya, but he knows his stuff.
