We aren't really gardeners, and I am all for an easy maintenance setup like native plants, but I suspect for a rental you don't get much choice.

Yep. My water bill is about 3x as much for the summer months (I'm billed every other month) due to running the sprinklers to try to keep the grass and garden alive.

I water any new plants in my garden for a year or two during the summer. But, if it's not raining then the grass isn't growing and I don't have to mow it. Much less maintenance to not run the sprinklers.

If I ran my water for a year or two I would own ocean front property. Don't you just love the English language?

I water my lawn all summer, and still never mow past May. But I have had to mow weekly just to keep it all below a foot tall this spring.
