We moved here from midwest. Lived in IL and WI for many years.
Wife is afflicted with allergies due to plant and dust.

I would say it is mildly better here but she still contends with issues associated with allergies here.

Depends on what type of allergies you have. In Portland I would always have it the worst in the spring when everything was blooming, but summer never really bothered me.

I have heard that Allergists can order what is called the Portland panel, a testing kit for the types of allergens in this area. Call a couple offices in Portland to see if you can be tested before contemplating a move.

Portland is great for allergies. The allergies thrive. It isn't so great for allergy sufferers with all the pollen and mold. There is plenty to be allergic to.

It's beyond me how this rumor got started that Portland is a great place to live if you have allergies.

I'm not 100% sure because I live in Seattle, but if she has hay fever there are terrible times in the Northwest. However, I live out in the woods near a landscaped golf course, so it may be different in the city. On the other hand, I was checking out Boise and I think their occasional smog would be more of an issue for me.

This is what I was thinking too. If you want to suffer from allergies, then Portland is an awesome place to be. I don't even bother with allergy meds anymore since all they do is make me drowsy and cranky.

I have two friends who have lived here for about 5-6 years. One from Indiana, one from Wisconsin and both have allergies now they didn't have before. My friend from MN had allergies before she moved here and that's still the case.

I'm from Ohio - moved here three years ago - and echo what has recently been said!

I NEVER suffered from allergies in Ohio - here, a completely different story. Routinely afflicted w/congestion, sometimes runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing, etc. I haven't had it officially diagnosed, yet, but I'm guessing it is the mold/mildew that is hyper-prevalent here (since it never gets cold enough to kill it).

Agree - what you're allergic to is the big point. There's not much cottonwood or ragweed out here, but there's plenty else.

On top of the mold, there's a pretty wide array of plants/trees that bloom any time between Feb and May. If evergreens are a trigger, you'll be more unhappy here.
