We have a 30' holly tree we want to cut down, We can't afford to pay a tree removal service and we can't fit the tree in our landfill/compost bin so where could we get rid of the tree for free? Or close to free? Thanks!

This is the wrong season to get rid of a holly tree for free. If you can wait until November harvest the holly and offer that for free on Craigslist. Then all you are left with is the heavy branches and trunk. Chop that into firewood sizes, try to give that away (most firewood needs to season so it won't be much use in the short term).

You could borrow a pickup truck, cut into pieces and take it to someplace like McFarlanes, where it will be turned into mulch and compost.

I don't know the rates exactly, but it shouldn't be more than 20 bucks for a piled high load.
Call them and find out.
If you call someone to haul it away, chances are that's where it'll end up.
McFarlanes is located by Lowes on 224 and 205 so it should be a short jaunt from Oregon City.
Whatever you do, remember to tarp your load, or you will get a pricey ticket.
Or put a "free" add on craigslist......you never know what people may want, and when.
Or just keep cutting it up and putting it in your yard debris bin, but that might take all summer.

Interesting. All I knew about Holly trees is their leaves. Usually there is a prime season for harvesting a tree used for household items because of sap migration. I would call the folks at Urban Timberworks and ask for their advice.

I cut a holly tree down in our yard a couple years ago and used it for firewood for camping trips. I gave it about a year to dry and it it burned just fine.
